TV historian Professor Simon Haslett from the University of Wales explained how a 1607 tsunami killed scores of people across the Burnham-On-Sea area during a well-attended talk in Highbridge on Wednesday (October 12th).
A record turnout of 100 people attended North Sedgemoor Local History Group’s meeting in Highbridge’s King Alfred School.
Simon’s lecture was based around the research he carried out for his BBC2 Timewatch television series.
The 1607 Flood in the Bristol Channel is recorded as being the worst-ever in the British Isles, with some researchers saying it was caused by a tsunami following an earthquake.
John Strickland, chair of the North Sedgemoor Local History Group, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Simon gave a fascinating, thought-provoking talk and explained in detail some of the local evidence around the 1607 flood. We were delighted to have a record turnout for his visit – and hope to follow this up with further talks about some of the local points raised.”
