Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has presented the residents of ‘Britain’s most festive street’ a special award to recognise their efforts in raising £60,000 for charity.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Martin Cox visited the residents of Trinity Close on Saturday (March 21st) to present them with a certificate recognising their annual display of 100,000 Christmas lights.
The display attracts national media attention and last year it was named by the Daily Mail as ‘Britain’s Most Festive Street’.
Cllr Cox said: “I am presenting all eight houses with a Mayor’s Special Award in recognition of the residents’ outstanding community Christmas Lighting and associated charity work over the years.”
“I have long admired the ‘wow factor’ of their annual Christmas lights and I wish to put on record my and the Town Council’s appreciation on behalf everyone who enjoys the display.”
“Earlier this year we announced that having won the joint entry in the Town Council’s annual Xmas lights competition for the past three years we acknowledged another spectacular display. However, we wanted to encourage other joint entries and we awarded first prize to 6 and 8 Stoneleigh close.”
“I understand there are an unbelievable total of 100,000 lights in the Trinity Close display and that as far as I can tell it’s become better and brighter and each year, with more houses gradually joining in and all adding or changing their lights.”
“Last Christmas seemed to me the busiest ever – I live in Golf Links Road and I judge this by the difficulty I had to drive up and down Berrow Road! The residents must be congratulated for the huge amount of money they have raised for charities over the years with a record £10,000 in 2014.”
The display was named by the Daily Mail as ‘Britain’s Most Festive Street’ last year and it was also a runner-up in a GMTV Christmas competition and appeared in a documentary called Britain’s Craziest Xmas Lights on Channel 5.
