Over 100 new trees were planted in one hour at Highbridge’s Apex Park this morning (Saturday, December 5th) when residents armed with shovels took part in a nationwide attempt to set a tree-planting world record.
Almost 40 people planted a total of 110 saplings surrounding Apex Park’s main car park, including Buddleia, Blackthorn, Silver Birch, Rowan and Guelder Rose.
The bid to set a new record, organised by BBC Breathing Places, aimed to plant one million trees across the UK in an hour, beating the current record of 653,143.
Volunteers of all ages took part and Janette Burton, Landscape Officer at Sedgemoor District Council, said the event had been a great success.
She told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’ve had a good turnout and comfortably planted 110 saplings in the hour. In fact, we had some time to spare!”
“The blackthorns will start to appear in the spring and all the trees have been chosen because of their benefits to local wildlife.”
