Plans by a Burnham-On-Sea holiday park to fell 48 protected trees on its property have been approved by district planners this week despite earlier objections from town councillors.
Burnham Holiday Village was given permission on Tuesday (February 5th) to fell a long line of trees beside homes in Maple Drive, pictured above.
The trees have a Protection Order on them and members of Burnham Town Council’s Planning Committee had voiced their concern about how the loss of the trees might expose neighbouring properties to noise and overlooking from the Holiday Village.
But district planners over-ruled their recommendation this week and gave consent to the felling.
Spokeswoman Janette Burton explained: “Many of the trees are subject to Tree Preservation Orders and were recently inspected by us on health and safety grounds.”
“Many were planted several years ago very close together and are reaching over-mature stage. During our assessment, we found some to be in a pretty poor condition and decided that now is therefore the right time to start felling and replacement. We’re recommending a phased approach to the felling, rather than all 48 in one go.”
The council also says some of the trees are diseased and therefore felling them is needed.
