A creative student from Burnham-On-Sea was among a group who staged a unique fashion show and photography exhibition earlier this week using an environmentally friendly theme.
The aptly named ‘Trash to Fashion’ show and exhibition took place at Weston College’s University Campus and was a combination of efforts from over 30 students studying the Creative and Media Diploma.
Students created costumes from recycled products and showcased their photography and film projects to highlight the importance of saving the planet and the damage being done to it.
Burnham student April Tomlin, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This course gave me the chance to stay in education and it has really built up my confidence, I feel ready to progress to the next stage.”
The group started planning the show in November last year and were asked to consider venue, costings, marketing and costumes with all ideas collated into the final production.
A crisp packet dress and bodice, designed by Jayde Reed, aged 17, pictured right, was a huge hit on the catwalk.
Other designs included a bin bag dress in the style of Lady GaGa, a skirt made from old postcards and an outfit made from CDs and old vinyls.
The students successfully managed the show from planning through to production, covering promotion, ticket sales and all costume design.
The show is the final outcome of the students’ last unit of work for the Diploma in Creative and Media.
The one year course enables students to develop a broad understanding of different creative industries and introduces them to a variety of techniques and processes within art, design and media.
Coralie Kyriacou, Lecturer for the Creative and Media Diploma, said: “Most of the students started this course with a very limited knowledge of any of the disciplines we have covered this year but they have worked so hard to bring together their individual arts disciplines to make the unique ‘Trash to Fashion’ event.”
