Burnham writing workshop draws plans for town centre theatre project

-

Over 20 people attended a unique writing workshop in Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (January 23rd) as part of the first phase of an arts project that will bring theatrical performances to shops in the town this Spring.

Six professional actors will stage 48 free live performances in shops across the town centre on Saturday 16th April as part of the ‘Trading Local’ project.

The countdown to the event started on Saturday with the first of four free writing workshops, which was held at Burnham-On-Sea Library.

“The workshop was very successful and we were inspired by the people sharing their ideas,” said project manager Jacqui Strong.

“Already words have been put onto paper and shared with the group – ideas that could be seen performed around the town as part of Trading Local project. Over 20 writers came together at the Library in Princess Street. There was such a positive response we are wondering whether there is more we could consider in the future.”

“The next workshop is on Tuesday 2nd February at the Crafty Teacup between 10am and mid-day. You do not have to attended Saturday’s workshop to come along, no experience needed, and if you have an idea for a monologue, but are not sure where to start or have never written before but just need some guidance, then come along and get involved.”

Others will be held on February 2nd from 10am-12 noon at Crafty Teacup cafe in Victoria Street; on February 11th from 2-4pm at The Round Tower Guesthouse on The Esplanade; and on February 17th at the Royal Clarence from 7pm-9pm.

The organisers are seeking first time and experienced writers to create five-minute scripts specifically for, and about, the town.

12 will be selected for professional production and audiences, residents, shoppers and visitors will see the results on Saturday 16th April.

The project is being organised in association with Burnham Community Theatre Group, supported by Burnham-On-Sea & Highbridge Town Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Co-op Funeral Care and Take Art. The group has also involved Burnham-On-Sea Chamber of Trade and Commerce in setting up the event.

The project is also being backed by Burnham-On-Sea Community Theatre group, which was set up in 2015 with the aim of making the professional theatre experience available to all, to work with everyone in the local community.

An additional project is running alongside within schools and residential homes, encouraging young people to write short stories as part of a competition. The stories will hopefully be shared amongst the residential homes later in the year who may not be able to access the event but would want to be involved.

The group has also organised a quiz night at the Ritz Social Club on Friday 5th February from 7.30pm. Entry will be £1 per person and all funds will help bring Trading Local to the town. More information is available from Jacqui Strong or Selina Keedwell via BOScommunitytheatre@hotmail.com
