Two fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea battled a blaze near Highbridge this morning (Friday, October 16th) when an oil leak caused a tractor and trailer to burst into flames.
One fire engine was initially called to Watchfield at 11.13am after a large column of smoke was spotted almost a mile away.
“Once in attendance they found a tractor and a trailer carrying waste to be well alight and requested a second appliance,” fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet and compressed air foam.”
“The tractor was completely destroyed by fire and heat and the trailer sustained twenty per cent damage.”
He added that the cause of the blaze is believed to have been a hydraulic hose breaking and spilling oil on to the engine and catching fire.
The road besides the scene was closed by police throughout Friday while arrangements were made to remove the remains of the vehicles.
