The date for the funeral of Burnham-On-Sea’s late town crier has been announced.
As we reported last week, Fred Smith, 72, died on October 23rd following a long struggle with poor health.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday 11th November at 1pm in St Mary’s Church in Bridgwater.
Town councillors held one minute’s silence in memory of Mr Smith at their start of their meeting earlier this week.
Fred, who was town crier for 24 years, had suffered serious health problems in recent years but continued to attend civic functions and shout the traditional cry of ‘Oh Yeaz, Oh Yeaz’ with gusto.
He became town crier in 1985 after the town council revived the position following a period of around 50 years with no-one in the role.
