Dozens of Europe’s leading cyclists speeded through the Burnham-On-Sea area on Friday (16th September) when stage six of the Tour of Britain cycle race visited Somerset.
The 91-mile Somerset leg of the UK’s largest free-to-watch sporting event gave the crowds who lined the route from Taunton to Wells a memorable spactacle.
Those watching the finale in Wells saw a high-speed pass of the finish line in Priory Road, then a 19 mile loop took the riders out to Shepton Mallet.
Lars Boom won the stage and extended his lead in the race.
The stage also passed through Shapwick before reaching Burtle, Watchfield, Mark, Blackford and Wedmore. Some of the biggest crowds were around Cheddar Gorge, one of the landmarks along the stage.
The Tour of Britain 2011 began in Peebles on Sunday 11th September and finishes in London on 18th September. ITV4 is showing daily highlights of the event.
After watching the end of the stage in Wells, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Highways, Councillor Harvey Siggs, said: “My congratulations to the Somerset stage winner Lars Boom, and my thanks to everyone who has participated in any way, even if only to watch these remarkable athletes.”
