The Tour of Britain cycle race won’t be visiting Burnham-On-Sea or Highbridge this September but its 100 participants will pass through the area.
Stage Six of Britain’s biggest cycle race will take place on Friday 16th September, beginning in Taunton and finishing in Wells during a 145 kilometre route.
During the stage, the cyclists will pass through Wedmore and Burtle on their way to Cheddar Gorge.
Cllr David Hall, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Economic Development at Somerset County Council, said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to Somerset this September. Not only will they see Olympic athletes in action in one of the UK’s greatest ‘free to view’ sporting events, but they will also be able to enjoy the many tourist attractions that Somerset has to offer.”
Stage Six will begin from East Reach in the centre of Taunton via Durston and Knapp and across West Sedge Moor to Langport and onto the Somerset Levels. After skirting Somerton and Street, The Tour of Britain will head for the famous climb of Cheddar Gorge.
Once on top of the Mendips, The Tour route will this year head towards Shepton Mallet, completing one and a half laps of a circuit, including the climb of Bristol Hill and allowing spectators at the finish in Wells to see the riders in action twice.
The Somerset stage finished in the centre of Burnham-On-Sea in 2008, attracting big crowds.
