Burnham-On-Sea fire crew rescue tortoises and birds from aviary blaze

-

Several birds and tortoises were rescued from an aviary which caught fire in Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday afternoon (May 2nd).

Crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater fire stations were sent to a house in Burnham Road at 2.20pm where an aviary had caught fire in the rear garden.

“On arrival crews found smoke issuing from a shed where it housed a creep of tortoises and several birds in cages,” said a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

“Crews got to work extinguishing the fire using two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.”

“In our quick response we managed to save all the tortoises and birds and the shed was only 10% damaged by fire.”

“It was confirmed that the fire had started accidentally. It is suspected a heat lamp was too close to bedding.”

The incident commander, Ian Hazelton, pictured, confirmed that the birds and tortoises within the aviary all survived the incident.
