Good and bad news for public toilet users in Burnham-On-Sea

-

Burnham-On-Sea looks set to gain one set of public toilets and lose another as part of a district council review of public conveniences in the town.

Burnham-On-Sea.com revealed in February that the review was underway amid concerns that several local facilities were threatened.

And this week, a meeting of Sedgemoor’s Policy Review and Service Improvement Committee delivered a number of recommendations on the future of public conveniences.

The toilets at Burnham’s hovercraft rescue building will be closed; the loos at Crosses Pen near Manor Gardens are to be re-opened; and the toilets in Seaview Road and at the Yacht Club will remain open.

The Committee have also recommended that a “realistic capital programme” is agreed to refurbish the facilities at Burnham’s Tourist Information Centre (pictured above).

The Committee considered a study carried out by a working group of seven district councillors who identified a number of facilities which might be suitable for closure or potential transfer to parish or town councils.

The recommendations – as outlined below – will now be handed to Sedgemoor’s Executive Committee on Wednesday 14th June when a final decision will be made.

Local resident Mike Lang, who has campaigned for the re-opening of the toilets at Manor Gardens, welcomed the news.

He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s about time. I’m glad the district council has made this very sensible recommendation. Young families and elderly people who use the Manor Gardens do need toilets close by and which are safe to visit.”
