The controversial sale of a block of former public toilets in Burnham-On-Sea is set to raise at least £30,000, Sedgemoor District Council disclosed this week.
The cash-strapped district council began inviting bids in March from firms interested in buying the building in Seaview Road, pictured here, after the toilets were closed in 2007 due to vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
Tim Mander, Sedgemoor District Council’s Strategic Property Manager, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “There’s been a fair amount of interest – three people have shown serious interest. The deadline for tenders is mid-December and we’re expecting bids in the region of £30,000 upwards.”
“One sale fell through after the summer at the last minute so the property was put back on the market.”
He added: “It is a large building with a fair amount of ground space and could be ideal for a residential development or storage, subject to a planning application.”
The decision to sell the toilets is particularly controversial as town councillors have been pressing for the funding raised from the sale to be retained for public services in Burnham.
