Future of Burnham-On-Sea public toilets to be decided this month

-

A controversial decision on whether a block of public toilets in Burnham-On-Sea should be sold off will be made by the district council on Wednesday (June 11th).

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last month that three bidders had expressed an interest in buying the property in Sea View Road, pictured.

The bids are now set to be considered by Sedgemoor District Council’s Executive Committee at a meeting on June 11th.

Burnham town councillor Neville Jones, who has campaigned against the closure, will speak at the meeting in favour of retaining the facility.

“We are very concerned about the potential loss of these toilets,” he said on Monday (June 2nd). “If they were going to be sold, we understood the money would be ring-fenced for Burnham and used to either improve existing public toilets or to create new ones.”

Cllr Chris Williams added this week: “We certainly don’t want to be left with one set of public toilets on The Esplanade. We need some at the northern end of the seafront.”

The district council began inviting bids in March from firms interested in buying the building, even though it had said last November that the loos would re-open in time for the start of this year’s tourist season.

The toilets were temporarily closed in April 2007 amid vandalism and anti-social behaviour and have never re-opened despite pressure from the town council and tourism bosses, who argue that more public loos are needed.
