Burnham brother and sister celebrate UK water skiing championships win

-

A brother and sister from Burnham-On-Sea are celebrating after making a big splash at the British Waterskiing Championships.

Toby Duggan, 12, won the Under 15s competition and sister Grace, 9, won the Under 12s competition after last week’s final round of action at Stone in Essex.

“They’ve both done outstandingly well,” proud stepfather Steve Cox told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“Grace won the Under 12s competition, making her the youngest ever champion and the first girl to win.”

“After winning the Under 12s competition himself last year, Toby was under some pressure to do well again, so we’re all delighted that he managed to follow this up with a win in the Under 15s category. Given his age, this is very impressive.”

Steve added that the pair are already looking forward to a busy 2009 season. “We hope to take it all one step further next year by competing in the European water skiing championships. Toby wants to take part in the Under 16s competition and Grace wants to compete in the Under 13s.”

Both youngsters have benefited from sponsorship funding of £1,000 from supermarket Asda’s Sporting Chance Campaign. Toby and Grace have been trained by local man Steve Bird, who won the UK Formula 3 national water skiing championships in 1997, and Mr Cox, who held the title of Formula 1 national water skiing champion in 1989.
