Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has said she is “disappointed” that the government’s review of the Trident nuclear weapons system has not considered removing nuclear arms altogether.
Tessa Munt’s comments came as she joined fellow MPs and campaigners, pictured, at an event outside Parliament organised by CND (the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) to launch a new report called The Real Alternative.
“CND’s report outlines how the UK can be safer, have a more flexible and responsive army and save more than £100 billion over the lifetime of a new Trident nuclear weapons system, if plans for replacement were to be scrapped,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Tessa says she agrees with CND that the government’s failure to consider non-replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system has been a “wasted opportunity.”
She added: “I remain committed to nuclear disarmament – which is, after all, the Government’s aim too! I can think of a thousand things the country needs on which the Government could spend that £100 billion.”
“It’s ridiculous to think that nuclear warheads contribute to our ability to defend ourselves against terrorists, which are our major threat.”
“I am disappointed that the Government’s review didn’t consider removing these weapons completely, but pleased that CND has produced its own report.”
“A decision not to renew Trident would be a landmark and help kickstart the flagging nuclear abolition talks, setting us firmly on the way to a nuclear weapons free world.”
