Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has welcomed the Chancellor’s Budget announcement that the income tax threshold will rise to £10,000, meaning that thousands of Somerset residents will not be paying any tax at all by April 2014.
The Chancellor lifted the level at which tax is paid from £9,200 to £10,000.
Tessa Munt said: “This means the Liberal Democrats’ main manifesto promise has been delivered in full, moving the tax threshold by over £3,500.”
She also welcomed plans announced by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg that give a £1bn boost to help parents with childcare costs. The changes should benefit 18,628 families across Somerset, saving a working family with two children up to £2,400 a year.
Tessa added: “Everyone knows that the cost of childcare is a big worry for many families. Almost a quarter of employed mothers say they would like to work longer hours but can’t do so because of the costs.”
“I was also very pleased that the Chancellor has dumped Labour’s fuel duty rise due in September and the plans to increase investment, especially in house building.”
