Exclusive: Tesco plans 17 new homes next to its Burnham store

-

Supermarket giant Tesco has this week controversially revealed it wants to build seventeen new homes on land at the western end of its Burnham-On-Sea store in Love Lane.

Plans for the new homes emerged on Tuesday (July 22nd) at a special exhibition in Burnham’s Princess Hall (pictured above) where shoppers were encouraged to give their feedback on plans to expand the Love Lane supermaket by 1,157 square metres.

Burnham-On-Sea TescoPlans for the 17 new homes appear to be being kept out of the limelight. A display board at the exhibition (pictured at the bottom of this page) and a Tesco leaflet simply state: “The plans provide for the development of land to the west of the store to accommodate up to seventeen three and four bedroom homes.”

The housing scheme is part of a multi-million pound expansion at the site. Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this month how the scheme is smaller than the extension proposed in 2005, but includes an extra 1,157 square metres of shopping space and 123 extra parking spaces.

The development would also include junction improvements at the site’s entrance on Ben Travers Way, a new pedestrian route, and bus stop and environmental improvements between the site and Love Lane.

Burnham Tesco Manager Dave Newton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Customers are constantly telling us they want a bigger and better quality Tesco store in Burnham-On-Sea with wider choice, better stocked shelves and less cramped aisles. This proposal will help us deliver the Tesco quality with greater efficiency.”

The new store would also incorporate a number of green building technologies, including a system to collect rainwater for toilet flushing, sensor controlled lighting systems, the use of recycled building materials and more windows to increase natural light in the store.

The company hopes to submit the scheme to Sedgemoor District Council for planning permission later this year and, if approved, building could begin in summer 2009.

The exhibition continues from 11am until 7pm on Wednesday (July 23rd).
