An annual ladies doubles tennis tournament played in memory of Jo Gooden, a past member of Burnham-On-Sea’s Avenue Tennis Club, was played at the weekend.
Jo Gooden (nee Champion) was a very popular member and prominent County player who was tragically killed in an accident at a young age.
Her family have been loyal supporters of the Avenue Club for many years and her father Dick Champion, presented a lovely cup in her memory which is played for every year.
Dick himself is also remembered with great affection by the club and it was his idea to start the tradition of presenting the winners with engraved tumblers, this being continued by one of Jo’s sisters, Jean Booth, who is a keen supporter of the tournament and who presents the prizes every year.
The tournament is played in a very relaxed and social atmosphere with players coming from tennis clubs around Somerset.
This year Elaine Amos (Avenue) and Stellar Millard (Yeovil) beat Sheila Jenkins (Street) and Poo Jenkins (Avenue) in the final, but everyone taking part enjoyed an excellent day’s tennis.
