Residents have this week welcomed the news that a long-awaited £20,000 revamp of a play area in Highbridge is set to go ahead this year.
Sedgemoor District Council has this week announced that the play area in Talbot Close is to be given a makeover, with improvements to the rusty 30-year-old play equipment.
Tina Gray, Vice Chairman of Highbridge Residents Association, pictured, who has campaigned for improvements for several years, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been a long time coming – much longer than we’d hoped – but this is great news.”
“I’m very pleased that this lovely little park is to receive a much-needed new lease of life. It’s nice to see something in Highbridge getting funding.”
Sedgemoor spokeswoman Claire Faun said the work has been approved after a period of council consultation. “Local residents have been consulted on what they would like to see in the Talbot Close park and were asked to choose between a traditional play park, community garden with vegetable planting or a community garden with shrubs and informal play equipment installed.”
“The results are that a replacement multi-play unit with a slide and safety surfacing and either a see-saw or roundabout will be installed to supplement the swings which will remain in place.”
The existing wooden palisade fencing will also be replaced with traditional play area style fencing which will be 1.2m bow-top galvanised with two self-closing pedestrian gates. A new bench and litter bin will also be supplied.
A tender specification is being drawn up and, once a supplier has been chosen, a timetable for the work will be agreed.
