Warning after used syringes are washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach

-

A shocked couple who found a container full of used medical syringes on Burnham-On-Sea beach have this week warned walkers to be extra vigilant.

Lainey and Darren Paul made the shock discovery while walking along the sand to the lighthouse on Friday.

“Our puppy, Ruggers, ran over to the concrete blocks and began poking and sniffing at something in the sand,” said Lainey.

“We were utterly shocked to see what he’d found – an open medical container with several used syringes inside.”

“I’m so relieved that it was only my puppy that found them and not some children playing on the beach who might have been tempted to touch them.”

She added: “I’m very keen for the story to be told to warn others who use the beach.”

“Hopefully there won’t be any more of these containers washed up, but I hope beach users keep a look out.”

The label on the container states that it is produced by Frontier Medical Group, a firm that produces needle containers and needle exchange packs designed for use on ‘harm reduction programmes’.

A warning on the container states that it is medical waste and adds: ‘Warning: Contains Used Needles’.

Sedgemoor District Council’s Clean Surroundings Team, which oversees beach cleaning, will be looking out for any further containers washed up.
