Dozens of swimmers took part in Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club’s first Swimarathon at the weekend, raising hundreds of pounds for good causes.
Over eighty swimmers of all ages participated in the fundraising swim which was held at the new ‘Splash’ at Brean Leisure Park.
Each team had no more than eight swimmers and was allocated a 50-minute slot to complete as many relay lengths as they could.
Teams were able to retain 45% of their sponsorship money for their own causes with the remainder going to Rotary for various charities, including Hospice South West.
Eleven teams took part, with teams coming from Beachside Holiday Park, 1st Berrow Guides and Brownies (4 teams), Brent Knoll Guides (2 teams), Burnham Dreamscheme (2 teams) and Burnham Inner Wheel Club. The Rich Family also took part in the event with their own team. All were presented with individual certificates by Rotary President Ian Breed at the end of the day.
Organiser Jim Tancock told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It wasn’t a race but the teams did want to raise as much in sponsorship as they could with the result that some swam well over one hundred lengths while others swam a little less!”
“What was clear was that all enjoyed the event immensely and are looking forward to the next one in a year’s time.”
“How much money is raised is not yet clear but a number of local businesses including Greenslade Taylor Hunt, Burnham Funeral Services, Beachside Holiday Park, Dulhorn Farm Holiday Park, NFU Mutual, B.A.S.C., Batch Country Hotel, Woodlands Hotel and main sponsors Brean Splash contributed generously to what was a very successful competition.”
“We are keen to do this again next year but want a lot more teams to take part so we shall be advertising and sending out invitations in the autumn.”
