In photos: Wildlife carers release 34 swans back into the wild

-

Over 30 swans that were rescued during last month’s wintry weather near Burnham-On-Sea have this weekend been released back into the wild.

Volunteers from Secret World Wildlife Rescue and Burnham-based BARB retrieved many of the birds on Boxing Day after they were found to be starving on frozen-over rhynes near Burtle, as reported here.

After spending a fortnight being nursed back to good health at Secret World in East Huntspill, the birds were released back into the wild on Saturday (January 8th), as pictured.

Secretworld’s Pauline Kidner told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was a wonderful sight to see the 34 swans running out of our vans towards the water. All but one has made a full recovery and has now been released, with one getting further treatment for lead poisoning. It’s been a busy winter for us, with every pen full.”
