Burnham rescue boat crew retrieves injured swan from canal

-

BARB’s inshore rescue boat crew was called out by East Huntspill’s Secret World at 9.45am on Tuesday, August 17th) after a member of the public reported seeing the distressed cygnet (pictured) on the Bridgwater Canal.

The BARB boat was taken by road to Bridgwater, where it was launched onto the water by five of the charity’s volunteer crewmembers near Taunton Road.

Secret World volunteer Mervyn Gratton told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The bird was in a lot of pain, having swallowed a discarded hook and line which had become lodged near its beak.”

“Thanks to the help of BARB, we managed to capture the bird from the boat with a net after a 40 minute operation. The bird has been taken to a vet for emergency treatment.”
