This swan was rescued by wildlife carers in Highbridge this week after injuring itself when it landed on the metal spikes of a security fence.
East Huntspill’s Secret World was called to help the bird – the charity’s first casualty of 2012 – when it struck the fence and needed emergency treatment.
“The bird misjudged its descent and tore its breast on the security spikes of a fence as it came into land in a yard in Highbridge,” a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Luckily, he was noticed by an animal lover who, realising that he had not moved from the spot where he had landed, raised the alarm.”
The swan – which has been named Spike – required several stitches to his injuries and is now making a good recovery at the East Huntspill charity. The bird is expected to be released back into the wild over the next few weeks.
