A Burnham-On-Sea policewoman was last night (Thursday) named the top PCSO in the whole of the Avon and Somerset police force area.
Police Community Support Officer Susan Venn-Adams was announced as the overall winner at the Neighbourhood Policing Awards dinner at the Cadbury House Hotel in Congresbury, having recently won the district award.
She was presented with her award by Burnham-On-Sea MP Tessa Munt, accompanied by Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens and Chief Constable Nick Gargan, pictured.
Tessa said: “I am absolutely delighted that Susan has won this award. She’s so well deserving, having provided support and help to young Dylan Cecil’s family during last summer’s tragedy and also helped many others. She was described as being ‘a rock’ by several of those she’s helped.”
“There many loud cheers when she was named the winner, so she clearly is a popular choice. She’s a brilliant person and it was great to celebrate her success.”
PCSO Venn-Adams, who was based at Burnham, but now works in Weston-super-Mare, said: “I’m over-whelmed and I wasn’t expecting it. People like me never win awards. I’m really honoured that the family would nominate me and it’s been a great evening. I am only the PCSO I am today because of the team I have got behind me so I’d like to thank them really.”
One resident, Julie Anne Ford, who proposed Sue, said: “Sue was a tower of strength throughout our ordeal, we believe she went way beyond the call of duty and became our shoulder to cry on and our friend when the worst was happening.”
Chief Constable Nick Gargan added: “The standard of nominations this year made the judging process really tough. From reading the citations, it’s clear that the winners mean so much to their communities. In addition to being a uniform presence on the street, they are very much part of the communities that they serve.”
“The fact that we received over 500 nominations from communities, residents and businesses across the force is a testament to the hard work and commitment shown by all the neighbourhood and response teams, specials and volunteers in Avon and Somerset.”
