240 athletes completed Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Sprint Triathlon on Sunday morning (June 10th).
They swam 500 metres in Burnham pool, then cycled 20km across the area, and ran 5km along the beach to Berrow and back.
The event was won by Steve Ferguson from Team Certini in a fast time of 55 minutes and 50 seconds. Celia Miall from West Country Triathletes was the first lady home in a time of 1:05:20 – both are pictured right.
Second overall place went to Iain Hindes from North Devon Triathletes in 58 minutes and 21 seconds.
The first local runner was Scott Jenkins from Burnham-On-Sea Tri Academy, who despite taking part in the 15-17 age category, still completed the course in an impressive time of one hour, three minutes and 54 seconds.
Several of Somerset’s police team were also taking part as part of a police contest. Among them was Burnham PCSO Sarah-Jane England.
The loudest cheers of the day went to 91 year-old Burnham pensioner Arthur Gilbert, who completed his 41st triathlon, as reported here.
Cllr Neville Jones, a long-time supporter of the event, was invited to present the awards at the end of the morning alongside race organisers Mark and Sara Cox-Conklin and Martin Rogers.
Mark told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The event went really well and was well supported. We were pleased that the weather stayed calm and dry for most of the morning. A big thank you goes to all who took part and those who helped to run the event, including all our marshalls.”
