An episode of the BBC’s TV show ‘Street Auction’, which raised almost £2,000 to pay for a much-needed break for a Burnham-On-Sea mother and her family after the tragic loss of a young family member, was broadcast on Friday (December 22nd).
The episode of BBC One’s Street Auction was filmed in Burnham’s Manor Gardens during June and was attended by hundreds of local people as the local community turned out to support Jo Clement, the mum of the late teenager Charley Marks, who took his own life in 2014.
The emotional episode featured the story behind the formation of In Charley’s Memory, a mental health support charity set up in Charley’s name. Members of the charity were interviewed, along with local residents.
The show’s format meant that the amount raised and the local beneficiary was not revealed until the end of the filming.
To loud cheers and clapping, the show’s presenter Paul Martin announced at the end of the show’s taping that £1,976 had been raised to enable Jo and her family to go away on a break together in recognition of their community work.
A very emotional Jo told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the end of the filming that was “completely stunned” to be the beneficiary, adding: “This is the nicest thing that anyone has ever done for me – it’s wonderful!”
The charity was formed after Charley took his own life, aged 18, in September 2014. The group supports and helps hundreds of young people and those affected by mental health.
