A big repair operation was underway along Burnham’s seafront on Friday (Janary 19th) after dozens of decorative illuminations were damaged and destroyed during Thursday’s 75mph storms.
As Burnham-On-Sea.com reported yesterday, almost half of the town’s seafront illuminations were badly damaged during the gales, with only 20 of the 48 remaining undamaged, according to the town council.
A local electrical company has been drafted in by the council to begin the big task of repairing them.
Town Councillor Neville Jones told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s a real blow – the lights cost £30,000 when we bought them and we’re now investigating whether our insurance is going to cover it. Almost half have been damaged in some way. These have been the worst storms to hit Burnham in at least 17 years.”
Elsewhere in our area, several trees were brought down and a lorry was blown over on the M5 near Burnham.
A whole street lighting column was brought down at the top of Cross Street. And John St South in the centre of town was closed due to falling roof tiles threatening pedestrians below.
