Burnham-On-Sea hit by high winds amid flood warning as storm arrives

-

A flood warning has been issued for Burnham-On-Sea, Brean and Berrow today as Storm Eleanor sweeps through the area.

Met Office forecasters say strong onshore wind gusts of up to 80mph are expected during the next few hours.

Given this week’s high tides, the Environment Agency is advising residents to be aware that spray and overtopping of sea walls could create some flooding – check the Burnham-On-Sea tide times.

“Flooding is expected for the coastline between South Esplanade and Berrow including Margaret Crescent, Pier Street, Abingdon Street, The Esplanade, College Street and Regent Street,” says the Environment Agency.

“Spray, overtopping or onshore flooding are predicted as a result of high water levels, strong onshore winds and large waves.”

A supply of sandbags was delivered by Sedgemoor District Council for seafront properties, as pictured here, which are located besides the pilot hut next to the BARB station on The Esplanade.

A yellow weather warning has also been issued by the Met Office, predicting gales with gusts of 60mph-70mph and a chance of some severe gusts of up to 80mph.

Carol Holt, the Environment Agency’s flood duty manager, said: “We urge people to stay safe on the coast – take extreme care on coastal paths and promenades, and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger trying to take ‘storm selfies’.”
