Gusts of up to 75mph and heavy rain gave the Burnham-On-Sea area a battering on Saturday (November 14th) with dozens of homes losing power and damage being caused to signs and trees.
A power cut near the village of Mark left dozens of people without power for several hours on Friday night. A spokesman for Western Power Distribution told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “55 customers were without power after a tree came down on power lines.”
Several huge advertising signs outside the new housing developments off Pepperall Road and next to Asda in Highbridge were blown over, as pictured.
A tree came down in Worston Lane, blocking a path, as pictured below. And the flags on Burnham’s pier were ripped to shreds by the gales.
The Met Office issued a Severe Weather Warning for the south west as a strong winter storm swept through the region.
Large waves slammed into Burnham’s sea wall on Friday and Saturday when the high winds struck at the height of the high tide.
Forecasters said there could also be up to 75mm (3in) of rain in parts of the South West, including the Burnham area, over 24 hours. The Environment Agency also put flood warnings in place along the River Parrett.
The weather also created unpleasant driving conditions on the M5 motorway past Burnham-On-Sea, with spray reducing visibility. Forecasters said there would be a “brief respite” at the end of Saturday ahead of more winter storms sweeping across the South West next week.
