Gale-force winds and a high tide combined to give Burnham-On-Sea’s Esplanade a battering on Wednesday morning (October 1st) when the first storm of the autumn hit the town.
These were the scenes as waves slammed into the sea wall, sending plumes of spray onto vehicles and several unspecting walkers along the seafront.
The Environment Agency took the precaution of shutting the flood gates at the top of Burnham’s jetty and at the Sailing Club to prevent any possibility of flooding. Meanwhile, power lines were blown down in Highbridge, cutting power to 89 homes.
Spray was blown over the sea wall on the North Esplanade during Wednesday morning’s high tide at 8.45am.
In Seaview Road, the roof of this bus shelter was blown off, leaving the County Council with the job of taping it off to keep users away. Several fences around Burnham were also blown down in the first autumn storm.
Walkers understandably gave these steps down to the beach in front of Burnham’s Clarence Hotel a miss.
What a difference 48 hours makes! These were scenes in Burnham on Sunday evening when flat seas and a lack of wind provided ‘Indian Summer’ conditions.
