Cllr Dennis Davey’s proposal that the computerised device – which flashes when an oncoming vehicle exceeds the speed limit – be introduced won the backing of councillors at Monday’s meeting of the council’s Policy and Finance Committee.
The decision has been welcomed by residents in Stoddens Road, pictured, who Burnham-On-Sea.com recently reported have called for more safety measures after a car careered off the road near the BASC ground on February 13th.
County councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton said during Monday’s meeting: “I certainly support anything that makes Stoddens Road safer. The device will be a great asset.”
Cllr Neville Jones added: “We definitely need better protection and safety measures on that bend.”
But Cllr John Morgan said: “I fail to see why so many vehicles go off the road there – it’s purely down to bad driving in my opinion.”
Two indicators, each costing £750 each, will be used in three fortnightly sessions during the year in Berrow Road and Stoddens Road.
Cllr Chris Williams questioned whether two of the devices should be bought and propoed that just one be bought for Stoddens Road only, however his motion failed after a vote by councillors by three votes to five.
Cllr Dennis Davey said: “The speed of traffic in Berrow Road is often horrendous. A device is needed there and another in Stoddens Road.”
A final decision on whether to accept the Policy and Finance Committee’s recommendation to purchase the devices will be made by the full town council at their next meeting on Monday March 7th.
