Motorists have been urged to take extra care after treacherous road conditions in Burnham-On-Sea caused a number of accidents on Saturday (December 18th), including this one in Stoddens Road.
Up to six inches of snow in Burnham created hazardrous driving conditions, as this motorist found when he slid off Stoddens Road on the bend near the BASC sports ground.
A digger was brought in to haul the stranded vehicle out of the ditch, as pictured here.
Car owner Giles Prewett told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A huge thank you goes out to all of the passers by that helped me. My partner and her children escaped from our car that ended up in the ditch at the end of Stoddens Road.”
“Especially, a big thank you goes to a kind gentleman and his wife (who incidentally may of hurt her hand rescuing us!) for their help. We do not know their names, but they drive a red van and must live locally. They went out of their way to help us, by driving the children and my partner to safety and wish to say a huge thank you to them for their kindness!”
Earlier in the day, a jacknifed lorry blocked two lanes of the M5 near Burnham’s junction 22 and two cars slid off the road in East Brent. A car left the southbound carriageway on Friday evening near Sedgemoor Services, as reported here.
Police have urged motorists to only travel if essential due to the dangerous conditions, which are set to continue during the next few days.
