Swimmers prepare for Burnham-On-Sea’s Stert Swim

-

With just a fortnight to go until Burnham-On-Sea’s annual Stert Island Swim, a group of participants took part in a practice on Saturday morning (July 3rd).

The unique 2,400m sea race takes place on Sunday July 18th, starting at mid-day, when a maximum line-up of 80 swimmers is expected to take part.

Saturday’s practice gave some of the swimmers, pictured here, a chance to experience the cold water during a ‘dry run’ of the event near the low lighthouse.

BARB’s inshore rescue boat was brought in to watch over the swimmers and ensure their safety.

Organiser Sara Hudghton of West Country Triathletes told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There has been a lot of interest from swimmers again this year. We’re hoping that good weather will bring out a large crowd of onlookers.”

The brave swimmers will swim from Burnham beach to Stert Island and back in front of crowds of watching spectators along The Esplanade.

The event is being supported by the Town Council, BARB, Natural England, Taunton Canoe Club, RNLI and St John Ambulance.

West Country Tri-Athletes took over the organisation of the annual summer event in February 2008 after Sedgemoor District Council said it could no longer afford to run it.
