Crowd of 3,000 set to watch Burnham-On-Sea’s Stert Island Swim
A crowd of up to 3,000 people is expected to line Burnham’s seafront to watch the annual Stert Island Swim this Sunday (July 30th).
A total of 80 intrepid swimmers from all over the South West will be participating in the 2,400m swim to Stert Island and back.
The challenge is not so much the distance, but the water conditions, which include tricky currents, cold water and the nearly nil visibility that the swimmers have to brave.
“The event is also very popular with spectators and over 3,000 people are expected to line Burnham’s Esplanade and beach to cheer on the swimmers,” said spokeswoman Linda Krause-Davies.
The swim starts at 10am and there will also be a wide selection of craft and charity stalls along The Esplanade throughout the day from 9.30am to 4.00pm.
Sedgemoor District Council, which is organising the event, thanked Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, King Alfred Sports Centre, BARB – The Burnham Hovercraft group, Wessex Ambulance Service, Burnham RNLI, English Nature, Somerfield and KwikSave for their help with the event.
Burnham-On-Sea.com will have a full photo round-up after the event.
