Swimmers wanting to take part in this summer’s annual sea swim between Burnham-On-Sea and Stert Island can now apply for one of the 80 places.
The 2,400 metre swim from Burnham beach to Stert Island and back will be held on Sunday July 30th, starting at 10am.
There are limited places available – and these are already being snapped up.
Any swimmer aged over 18 can enter, but organisers stress that the event should not be taken lightly.
“It takes place in a tidal estuary and participants should be aware of the
dangers inherent with sea swimming and be confident in their ability in open water,” a spokeswoman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Also, while water purity is within EEC guidelines, visibility in the water is nil and the temperature in July is approximately 15°C so it’s strongly recommended that wetsuits be worn for warmth and buoyancy.”
Shipping will be stopped for 90 minutes – the maximum time allowed for swimmers to complete the course – and for safety reasons anyone deemed likely to take longer than this may be taken out of the water by the marshalls.
The closing date for entries is Monday July 24th 2006 and an online entry form can be downloaded from the link below. Entries cost £7.50.
