Safety fears raised over Brean amusement arcade’s extension

-

Worried parish councillors have this week expressed concern about plans to build a new fast food outlet at an amusement arcade in Brean, near Burnham-On-Sea, which they say may lead to road safety issues during the summer.

Stardust has applied for planning permission to build a single storey extension at its South Road property to be used as a fast food outlet – but councillors are concerned that a lack of car parking in the area will cause safety issues.

Stardust amusements in Brean, near Burnham-On-SeaBarry Hunt, clerk of the council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have always had concerns about parking here. Stardust originally said they were going to introduce car parking spaces on their forecourt, but they later appeared to change their minds and the area is taken up by tables and children’s rides.”

“We are quite concened that when this area gets very busy in the summer months when there are children crossing the road, cars parked on double yellow lines and lots of other traffic, that there may be an accident.”

Brean councillors have therefore decided to register their concerns with Sedgemoor district planners, who will ultimately decide whether the application gets the green light.

Mr Hunt added: “We have not objected to the overall development of the arcade – there are no planning grounds for that – but we are expressing concerns about safety.”

The application states that the 17.5m x 15m extension to the north east elevation would include a verandah and canopy for the use of smokers.
