A Burnham-On-Sea school has this week been presented with 50 free young trees to help improve its grounds.
St Joseph’s Primary School will use the saplings from Monkton Elm Garden and Pet Centre, near Taunton, to make the school more eco-friendly.
Reception and Year One Teacher, Ellie Mason explained: “Our eco committee, which consists of a number of pupils, has been working really hard to take care of the school grounds, especially our secret garden.”
“We are extremely grateful for the centre’s donation and will use these trees to help improve our secret garden and make it a fun place to learn all about the environment and watch things grow.”
In January, Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre invited not-for-profit organisations that needed support for their conservation projects to apply for between 50 and 100 small saplings.
Plant Manager Andrew Pitman, who has worked at the family-run garden centre for more than 25 years, explained: “We set aside 2,011 small sapling trees to give to worthy causes for schemes they are running in 2011.”
“The trees were allocated on a first come, first served basis. We are delighted to have been able to lend a helping hand to schools, community groups and charities again this year.”
