Sport at St Joseph’s School in Burnham-On-Sea is flourishing after a successful term.
The school has seen a huge amount of sporting achievements with the girls and boys football teams, as well as the athletics team earning qualification to the prestigious County Finals which will take place in the New Year.
The school’s Cross Country Team, involving more than 40 children, is also thriving and currently sits in third place in the Sedgemoor Area League of more than 20 schools.
“The success has to go down to the attitude and determination of all the children in the school, along with the positive profile that PE has been given during curriculum time,” says the school’s PE co-ordinator Mark Fisher.
“PE is prioritised on the school timetable and teaching experts are regularly brought into the school to support and help develop teacher delivery of the subject area.”
“There are also numerous after-school sporting opportunities for the children to engage in and attendance in these clubs is always very high.
“Many of the team events this term have taken place in poor conditions. However, the children have been well prepared for the elements thanks to some kind sponsorship from Rob Broom in conjunction with his business Beachwood Holiday Let in Millendreath, Nr Looe, Cornwall.
“He generously purchased a magnificent set of tracksuit tops for the children (and teachers) to wear whenever they compete. This not only keeps the children warm in poor weather, but also helps them to feel a real sense of belonging.”
“With further football and athletics to look forward to in the New Year, along with the introduction of Gymnastics and Tag Rugby competitions, hopefully the school will continue to thrive throughout the Spring Term.”
