Burnham-On-Sea’s ex-MP visits pupils who featured in Lords debate

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s former MP has visited a group of town students whose work has been featured in a House Of Lords debate that could lead to a change in the laws over junk food TV advertising.

Thirty Year 4 students at St Jospeh’s School in Burnham sent their project work on the issue to Baroness Walmsley, and she was so impressed that she referred to it during a Lords debate earlier this year about reducing child obesity and junk food advertising.

Burnham’s Tessa Munt, who helped to secure the debate, delivered copies of the Hansard Report of the debate to each of the pupils at St Joseph’s School this week.

“The children wrote of their concerns and the Lib Dem Baroness, Lady Joan Walmsley quoted directly from the children’s letters in her speech in the House of Lords.”

“I was also able to give the children’s teacher, Ms Orledge, a copy of the Government’s recently issued plan to tackle childhood obesity.”

She added: “It was great to be able to give the Year 4 children copies of the Official Parliamentary Report of Joan Walmsley’s speech, and I could see they were pleased and excited that their concerns had been taken into account by the Minister.”

“I’m looking forward to hearing what they’ll highlight with Government in their next school year!”
