St John’s Church in Highbridge is to celebrate the 150th year since its consecration with a week of events in June to mark the milestone.
The celebrations will begin on Saturday June 13th with a Victorian Children’s Tea Party that will be open to all youngsters.
An exhibition of Highbridge life from many local organisations and businesses will be open throughout the week during the afternoons.
On Monday June 15th, the church’s wedding and baptism records will be on show, giving visitors a chance to share memories of weddings and baptisms over the years.
The Coastline Singers will perform their latest selection of dance-themed music during a special concert on Tuesday 16th June – and this will be followed on Wednesday June 17th by Alan Cook, the Diocesan Music Advisor, and past organist of St John’s Church, leading an evening of music, stories and anecdotes.
Thursday June 18th will see a special celebration of ‘Old Highbridge’ being held, which will give visitors a rare chance to see historical slides shown by June Thomas.
A special youth event is being planned for Friday June 19th and on Saturday June 20th the annual church summer fayre will be held at St John’s School.
The culmination of the celebrations will be held on Sunday June 21st when a Service of Thanksgiving will be led by the Bishop of Taunton, followed by a ‘bring and share lunch’ when churchgoers will get an opportunity to come and meet the Bishop. In the afternoon there will also be a ‘Songs of Praise’ service.
“The church would like to encourage anybody who has had a connection to the church over the years to come and help us celebrate. Come along and take part, share your experiences and contribute your ideas to future plans,” Derick Cooper, one of the organisers, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
