A Highbridge church has started a fundraising appeal to enable urgent repairs to go ahead to a 160 year-old stained glass window which is in danger of collapse.
One of the large windows in the east wing of St John’s Church needs to be repaired at an estimated cost of £3,000.
Rev Sharon Crossman, who is the church’s vicar, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s a lovely old window that displays the story of the crucifixion and resurrection but over time the glass has started to buckle and get out of shape.”
“As time goes by there’s a risk of it breaking and collapsing, damaging the glass above it, so we’d really like to repair it.”
“We therefore need to raise £3,000 to get the delicate work done to reset it, repair it and adding new metal supports while retaining the original 160 year-old glass.”
The fundraising has already been boosted by a fish and chip supper and a popular three-day flower show, which was held last weekend.
A wide range of floral displays were introduced around the church with visitors encouraged to make donations. Further events are planned.
