A church hall requires thousands of pounds of repairs after its roof was severely damaged during recent bad weather, forcing it to close until the autumn.
St John’s Church Hall in Highbridge will remain shut for another three months while repairs to its roof and interior go ahead, leading five clubs having to find alternative meeting venues.
Reverend Sharon Crossman, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Recent high winds and heavy rain have unfortunately caused considerable damage to our roof.”
“A third of the felting was blown off and a lot of rainwater came in, causing damage to the ceilings, kitchen, toilet area and other parts of the building.”
She added: “The repairs will be costly and, in addition to the roof itself, will include new ceiling tiles, electrics and decoration.”
“We are working hard to get the work completed over the summer and hope to have the hall re-open again in September.”
She added that five groups which used the hall, including Highbridge’s toddler group, have all had to be accommodated elsewhere until the repairs are complete.
“They have all been very understanding, for which we are grateful,” said Reverend Crossman.
She explained that the cost of the work is currently unknown.
“We are still waiting for the fianl repair bill, but it’s expected to be several thousand pounds.”
“We hope the work will be covered by our insurance, but fully expect to have to do some extra fundraising over the summer.”
