Two St John Ambulance cadets from the Highbridge and Burnham group are celebrating this week after finishing in the top three places at the national finals of the St John Ambulance First Aid Competition.
Charlotte Aldred, 16, and Lucy Westlake, 14, travelled to Croydon on Saturday (July 5th) to compete against first aiders from across the UK.
They were representing South West England, having won the regional finals back in April, as previously reported here by Burnham-On-Sea.com.
On Saturday, the two girls had to complete an individual test and a team test with judges closely watching their every move. Charlotte had to deal with a girl who had become trapped underneath a go-kart, while Lucy treated a man with a history of angina who had gone into cardiac arrest and needed resuscitation.
For their team test, the pair dealt with a scenario in a supermarket where two elderly ladies had collided their trollies, causing one to fracture their hip and the other to cut her leg.
A spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The girls were delighted to be placed third overall, which was an excellent achievement especially since this was their first time competing at this level.”
“Charlotte and Lucy have put in many hours of training over several years to reach this standard and both thanked those who have helped them, especially Colin Rawlinson.”
