A £130,000 project to modernise the interior of a Burnham-On-Sea church is on track to be completed during the next few weeks.
Builders have been working inside St Andrew’s Church on The Esplanade since last October, carrying out a six month project, which is on schedule to finish during March.
The church’s vicar, Reverend Graham Witts, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the work will bring a number of benefits to churchgoers.
“We’re opening up a new entrance into the church at the western end, which will make it far easier for disabled people to access the church. This is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time because the current entrance has steps and is difficult for some wheelchair users.”
He added: “A large section of pews under the balcony has also been removed to make way for a new social area for concerts and meetings. There are plans to use this for various activities throughout the year.”
“We’ve also leveled out many of the church’s tiled flooring areas to remove some of the dips, and our two angel statues are being moved onto new stone plinths at the rear of the church which will form a new entrance to the font area.”
Rev Witts added: “It’s been a big project and we’re all looking forwards to seeing it completed during the next few weeks when the plans will be turn into reality.”
He said that the church hopes to start a second phase of development work later in the year to create a new access route to the church’s toilets.
And the work doesn’t stop there – the team at the church are also planning a £100,000 modernisation of nearby St Andrew’s Church Hall, where flooring and internal decor needs to be overhauled.
