£60k plans for new Highbridge play park given ‘thumbs-up’ by residents

-

Residents in Highbridge have given a ‘thumbs-up’ to proposals for a new £60,000 play park during a public exhibition in the town on Monday (December 17th).

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here, Sedgemoor District Council has commissioned building firm Halcrow to prepare a design for the new children’s play area, which will replace the current 20-year old facilities at Southwell Gardens next to the playing fields behind the town’s St John Ambulance HQ.

Sedgemoor District Council’s parks officer, Harley Cook, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that over 40 residents had attended Monday’s consultation event in Highbridge War Memorial Trust Hall.

“Residents have given us very positive feedback about the plans. They like the proposed design and layout of the equipment, which will be suitable for children aged 2-14,” he said.

The new play area is being funded by property developers’ mandatory community contributions to offset the impact of local housing development.

Harley said he hopes the commercial tender process will begin in January 2013 and construction could start in April, with the new play park opening in the summer.

The new modern play equipment will have a seaside adventure theme and will include balancing, swinging, climbing, sliding, spinning and other activities.

Highbridge War Memorial Trust Hall, which owns the land, has welcomed the proposals. “The current equipment has been in place for over 20 years and definitely needs replacing, so we are very pleased to see this scheme,” said the group’s Pam Lyes.
