A Burnham-On-Sea man is set to walk up and down Brean Down 100 times in a day to raise money for a children’s charity this weekend with the hope of inspiring others to conquer their personal goals.
Sonny Topham, 26, a lecturer at Bridgwater College, has been following a gruelling training regime which has seen him walk up and down the 97-metre many times and he says that he expects his 100 will take him around 12 hours.
Walking up and down Brean Down will count as one climb and he says the training has been “the furthest he has ever pushed himself in terms of fitness.”
He will start at 6am this Saturday (June 10th) and will be joined by several friends, but he will be the only one who aims to complete the full challenge.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I walked up and down the steps 10 times about two years ago and thought at the time ‘I wonder if I could do 100?'”
“That thought has stuck with me and I recently realised it would be a great way of raising money at the same time as achieving a personal goal.”
Sonny will be raising money for CLIC Sargent Children’s Cancer Charity and Sensational Kids Somerset and has already raised more than £700.
In total, Sonny will climb 44,000 steps over the 12 hours. He will climb the equivalent of Mount Everest, which sits at 8,848 metres, compared with the 9,700 metres he faces.
“I want to do this not only to raise money but to show people anything is possible if you put your mind to it and how important it is to get outside and healthy and active as it makes you feel great.”
