The manager of the Highbridge-based Somerset Rebels speedway team has spoken of his relief that star rider Jason Doyle has escaped without serious injury following a horror crash in Saturday’s British Grand Prix.
The defending world champion was thrown from his machine, which followed through and landed on top of him, in Cardiff but he was discharged from hospital without any serious breaks.
The drama occurred in heat 20 when British Champion Robert Lambert made an inside pass which innocently ended in contact with Jason’s front wheel, launching Doyle into the air barrier with his bike ploughing into him with full force.
Jason did suffer a few moments of unconsciousness and was taken to hospital for a full examination.
Rebels team manager Garry May said on Sunday evening: “I think I speak on behalf of all speedway supporters when I say that the news we received today was amazing.”
“To come through that sort of crash without serious injury was incredible. Jason is feeling pretty much second-hand right now and will be side-lined for a couple of weeks under medical precautions. There is no doubt that we will miss him during his time off the saddle, but the important thing is for us to wish him a speedy recovery.”
Jason has expressed his thanks to everyone who has sent him personal get-well messages since his Cardiff crash.
The Rebels’ next meeting is on 30th July at King’s Lynn and then they host Swindon on August 1st, so Jason Doyle will be missing both those fixtures, but the hope is that he will be fit enough for the next round of the Speedway GP which is being held on Saturday 11th August at Malilla, Sweden and then the Rebels home meeting on August 8th against Wolverhampton.
