Proposals to build a major new solar energy park in Watchfield, near Highbridge, have been approved by Sedgemoor District Council this week.
The planning application by Hadstone Energy Limited to construct a solar park on land next to Pillmore Lane was given the nod on Thursday.
As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here, Hadstone wants to build the solar park on farmland next to Pillmore Lane, east of the M5 motorway.
The facilities are expected to generate around 9MW of electricity, enough to power 1,900 homes.
The firm displayed its plans at an exhibition in Watchfield Village Hall during April when feedback from the local community was mostly positive.
Director James Rowe told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The response was 95% supportive or strongly supportive of the project. Most people seemed to accept that farmers need to diversity their income sources, that the solar park wouldn’t be easy to see and that it wouldn’t have an adverse effect on local residents. There were very few people who were concerned.”
